Dignity Health providers on Oct. 15 will begin testing some airline passengers flying to Hawaii as part of a new pilot program from United Airlines.
United Airlines on Thursday said it’s partnered with Dignity Health-GoHealth Urgent Care and genomics company Color to make COVID-19 tests available to customers flying from San Francisco International Airport to airports in Hawaii. United Airlines worked with the Hawaii government to meet state requirements, so customers with negative results don’t have to complete a 14-day quarantine.
United Airlines is the first U.S. airline to make COVID-19 tests available customers, according to the company.
Passengers will have the option to take a COVID-19 test at San Francisco International Airport the day of their flight or to complete a mail-in test before their trip.
Passengers who opt for same-day testing will receive rapid tests administered by providers with GoHealth Urgent Care and its California health system partner Dignity Health at a designated COVID-19 testing area at the airport. The test, which is from Abbott Laboratories, advertises providing results in about 15 minutes.
The mail-in test option involves a self-collection kit from Color, which processes tests at their COVID-19 testing laboratory and says it returns results within 48 hours.
United Airlines plans to expand the testing program to other U.S. airports throughout the year, according to Toby Enqvist, the company’s chief customer officer.
United Airlines previously partnered with GoHealth Urgent Care in July as part of a program to test international flight crews at San Francisco International Airport.
